GST Calculation Formulas

The mathematical operations to add or extract GST are structured as follows:

1. GST Exclusive (To Add Tax)

When adding tax on top of a base amount, the equation is:

GST Amount = Base Price × ( GST Rate % / 100 )
Total Amount = Base Price + GST Amount

2. GST Inclusive (To Extract Tax)

When the tax is already integrated into the final retail selling cost:

GST Amount = Retail Price - [ Retail Price / ( 1 + (GST Rate % / 100) ) ]
Base Price = Retail Price - GST Amount

3. CGST & SGST Intrastate Split

CGST = SGST = GST Amount / 2

Step-by-Step Intrastate Splitting Example

Let's take a service base cost of ₹10,000 with a standard service tax rate of 18%:

  • GST Exclusive Case:
    • GST Tax Amount = 10,000 × (18 / 100) = ₹1,800
    • Grand Total = 10,000 + 1,800 = ₹11,800
    • Intrastate splits: CGST (9%) = ₹900, SGST (9%) = ₹900
  • GST Inclusive Case:
    • GST Tax Amount = 10,000 - [ 10,000 / (1 + 0.18) ] = ₹1,525.42
    • Net Base Price = ₹8,474.58
    • Intrastate splits: CGST (9%) = ₹762.71, SGST (9%) = ₹762.71

Frequently Asked Questions

GST Exclusive means the price of the product does not include the GST tax amount; tax is added on top of the base price. GST Inclusive means the tax amount is already incorporated into the final retail selling price.

For intrastate transactions within India, the total GST rate is divided equally into two components: Central GST (CGST) which goes to the central government, and State GST (SGST) which goes to the respective state government.

The standard tax rate structures defined by the GST Council are 5% (essential goods), 12% (standard rate items), 18% (most services and standard items), and 28% (luxury items and sin goods). Certain gold items also have a special rate of 3%.
